The Gentle Way

What is Judo?

Judo, meaning “the gentle way,” is a modern Japanese martial art and Olympic sport founded in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano. It is a system of unarmed combat that uses throws, pins, chokes, and joint locks — emphasising technique and timing over brute strength.

More than just a sport, judo is an educational method for developing the whole person. Its two guiding principles — maximum efficiency with minimum effort, and mutual welfare and benefit — extend far beyond the mat.
